30th October 2009

Trick or Treat - it's up to you!

As the leaves of autumn swirl around
The October night is full of sound
All over town they can be seen
The kids dressed up for Halloween
In purple wigs and witches’ hats
With twiggy broomsticks and plastic bats
Of this night they make the most
Clad as wizards, ghouls and ghosts
Adding to the evening's thrills
Pumpkins glow on window sills

When Saturday evening shadows fall
At neighbours’ houses they will call
They’ll be round for tricks or treats
Seeking lots of sticky sweets
If this whole event you despise
Why not don your own disguise,
Scream and cackle at the door -
Then they won't bother you any more!

What did YOU do with your Extra Hour?

Sixty minutes doesn’t seem long
But an extra hour can’t be wrong
(Even though by five the light
Has all but gone - it feels like night
And, at seven in the morning,
When you’re coming to and yawning,
The day’s already well begun
Look out your window, there’s the sun!)

How you use it’s up to you
There’s so much choice of what to do:
Spend it wisely, get things done,
Clean the car, go for a run,
Early breakfast, tea and toast -
Of this time make the most

Or you may choose in bed to stay
And snore the extra hour away
Or do something more lascivious -
To that we’d like to stay oblivious!
Whatever you do it’s still a treat
As it’s another year for a repeat!

the Weekly Poem is on its way...

oh yes it is ! And this week it's all about those clocks going back tomorrow night giving us an extra hour ! What will YOU do with it ???

The Weekly Poem - dedicated to Doreen

Once in while (or more for some)
The day of moving house will come,
Keenly sought, closely planned,
Friends around to lend a hand.
Stuff's been packed away for days -
How much you have can still amaze.
All is emptied from your place,
A tiny tear rolls down your face.
Before you leave, a last look round,
Then off to the new place you have found
Where you unload all your stuff
(Seems you have more than enough)
To fill the rooms and shelves and nooks
(You'll need plenty screws and hooks)
Until everything's in splendid fettle -
Unless of course you've lost the kettle !

And though for your old home you might long
In no time at all you will belong
In your new home, because, you see,
All your memories still will be
Inside your heart, your head, your mind -
Not one will have been left behind.

new Weekly Poem tomorrow - stand by your beds !

Tuesday, 13 October 2009

Wordybirdies are working on a special project for which we are composing a very special poem - we hope to be able to put it on this site before long but as it involves the agreement of other parties, we don't quite know yet.

We hope you're enjoying our Weekly Poems - they give us great pleasure to write every Friday and we hope that they bring a little sunshine into your week. If you're having a great week, well then they just make it even greater, and if you're having a not-so-great week, then maybe they will bring you a little fun and comfort for a while.

A stylish Weekly Poem !

As nights draw in and temperatures drop
And into our comfy chairs we flop
Along comes something designed to cheer,
The greatest style show of the year!
Of course it's London Fashion Week,
Strutting models tall and sleek
Showing off the latest craze
Mostly designed to amaze.

Like, for instance, the killer heels -
Who knows how the poor girl feels
Tottering on all nine inches
Coping with those vicious pinches
On toe and heel and arch and soles
Akin to walking on hot coals.
All in the name of looking cool
One step ahead, the golden rule.

While we stay home with the nippers
And shuffle round in comfy slippers
Not high fashion, not off the wall,
But at least our feet don't hurt at all !

it's there...

Yes, our ode to The Leader is in today's paper, on page 12.

if you don't live in North East Wales and have absolutely NO idea what, where or how much The Leader is, we'll post the poem up on here tomorrow in addition to our Weekly Poem.

twenty words ?...no, no...we mean twenty lines !

Yes, that's right of course - twenty lines. Although we could do a twenty-word ode if that's what you'd like...sometimes less really is more...

National Poetry Day tomorrow !

...and the Wordybirdies are getting really excited about seeing their specially-written poem in The Leader tomorrow morning. Based on the theme of Heroes and Heroines we penned this twenty-word ode to our local newspaper to celebrate its contribution to local life and also to celebrate the fact that it has very recently become a morning newspaper instead of an evening one. Find it at www.leaderlive.co.uk tomorrow !

Also excited about the fact that our lovely website is now under construction - we can't wait to see it on screen but are having to be patient ! In the meantime, if you want to contact us why not ring us on 07854 047388.

the Weekly Poem - Heroes and Heroines

Here it is, the special Wordybirdies Weekly Poem for National Poetry Day, whose theme is Heroes and Heroines:

October 2nd 2009 - Hydref 2 2009

No need of medal nor laurel wreath,

everyday heroes go on beneath,

quietly adding love to life,

easing out the strain and strife

in simple acts that mean so much:

the sunny smile, the gentle touch,

the cheery wave, the friendly word,

the heartfelt thank you, the worry heard,

the offer of help not sought out,

good intentions not in doubt.

For all of this there is no cost -

so much is gained, and nothing lost.

Everyday heroes are everywhere

Your chance to join them is right there.

Make the difference, do the good deed -

To be a hero - that's all you need.

National Poetry Day

With National Poetry Day coming up next Thursday, 8th October, Wordybirdies are composing a special poem celebrating the theme of the Day, which is Heroes and Heroines. Look back later for a really special Weekly Poem.
