a seasonal message for 28th December

Hi everyone - wordybirdies would like to say we hope you had a fab Christmas and are looking forward to 2010 as much as we are...our great new website and poetry-writing business is launched on January 1st! When there will also be a great new Weekly Poem for New Year's Day. what's not to be excited about???

Friday, 18 December 2009

a poem that has (almost) nothing to do with Christmas...

Most of us have quickly learned
that of the money we have earned
we need to squirrel some away
and save up for our holiday.

Used stamps we save to help the blind,
and in many cupboards you will find
boxes, ribbons, tissue paper,
odds and ends that'll "come in later"

Some economies, though small,
have implications for us all -
switch off a light, save energy,
protect our planet for you and me.

One resource we can't conserve
(used up quicker than we deserve),
time's the thing that we all lack
spend it wisely - it won't come back!

wordybirdies' Weekly Poem for Friday 11th December 2009

So what if Christmas is nearly here,
the warmth has gone, the skies are clear,
the night-time’s twice as long as day,
your summer stuff’s been packed away -

for though it is the festive season
frankly that is just no reason
to stay indoors and have hot drinks,
that’s just what everybody thinks.

Steaming chips in soggy paper,
that’s the perfect winter caper!
Eaten from your frozen hand
as you stroll the windswept sand.

Dare to be different, cut a dash -
but maybe skip the icy splash
in six-foot waves on winter seas!
You don’t really want to freeze!

And instead of your bikini,
sunhat, sunshade, dry martini,
wear all your lovely winter togs.
If you’ve got them, take the dogs!

Just get out there and pretend
the summer’s never going to end.
That sunshine feeling’s in your reach.
Shrug off the winter – hit the beach!

a little update from the wordybirdies for 9th december

Christmas is approaching fast, isn't it? and the wordybirdies are working flat out to get the website up and live by New Year. Who knew there was so much to do? But it will certainly be worth it when you see it.

Weekly Poem coming in less than forty-eight hours...thinking it will be on some sort of seasonal theme, but definitely not about pudding, mince pies or brandy butter!

4th December 2009

Girls’ Night in

Around the table we are sat
To share a meal and girly chat
We’ll talk ourselves nearly hoarse
You bring the starter, I’ll do the main course
Catching up on all we’ve done
Drinking wine and having fun
“Haven’t heard from you in a while
Good to see you, I’ve missed your smile”

“Been away? Tell us what you did
How’s the other half and kids?”
Sharing all our hopes and fears
Our aches and pains and our careers
Some of it’s important stuff
Much of it just bits of fluff -
“You’ll never guess what I’ve just heard,
Keep it secret, tell not a word!”

Swapping advice and hearing news,
Telling stories that amuse
“Tell me now, what’s your view,
In my shoes, what would you do?”
All the things we see in life -
Latest celebs under the knife
“More chocolate pud? I simply couldn’t!”
“Another glass? I really shouldn’t ….”

And by the end of the night
We have put the world to rights
But, at last, we are replete
Not just with food we’ve had to eat
Maybe shed some tears but had a laugh
A problem shared’s one cut in half
All in all, there is no doubt
A girls’ night in is the new night out

a new type of poetry from wordybirdies for early December

have another look at the weekly poem and see if you can spot what we've done.

The first letter of each line spells - how appropriate! - wintertime and this is the first acrostic poem we've done on our blog. the wordybirdies thought it was maybe time for a little poetic experiment to get the festive season going...hope you love it.

A different type of wordybirdies poem

WINTERTIME

Windblown leaves thick on the ground
In several layers wrapped
Nature’s gone full circle now
The year’s energy is sapped
Each December, at this time
Resolve to be of good cheer
Trust Mother Nature plays her part
In time, spring will reappear
Make restful days with loved ones perfect
Endings to every year

Hope you enjoy our weekly poem, it's another example of what we can do!

special wordybirdies Weekly Poem coming later

...oh yes indeed! Hope last week's didn't make you think "there's just too much to do - let's cancel Christmas!" - rather, we hope it made you think "wa-hey! the festive season is upon us - let's go out and have fun while we shop and cook and celebrate!"

off to look at some baby reindeer later - well, it is the time of year for it - and it's an event in aid of our local hospice too, so should be great all round.

hoping to have a poetic time!

the wordybirdies Weekly Poem for 20th November 2009

SEASONAL CHEER…

If for one moment you were in doubt
We’ve news for you: the secret’s out,
The festive season’s now begun,
The headlong rush to get it done.

Each year we say that we won’t do it
But yet again, you know, we blew it
‘Though we’re still only in November
It might as well be mid-December,

For we clearly just cannot resist
The lure of the massive Christmas list:
Presents to buy, the pudding to make,
Deciding on which Christmas cake,

Letters to Santa that must be posted,
Parties planned that must be hosted,
And then of course what type of tree –
Real or fake – which will it be?

Who’ll be there for Christmas dinner?
How in four weeks can we get thinner?
Is it a good time to go on the wagon
While buying champagne by the flagon?

Things to wrap, things to post,
Picking the size of bird to roast.
Which carol service, which Nativity?
Each night one more festivity.

There’s more than a month left to go
The town already has a festive glow,
The streets hung with illuminations,
The start of office celebrations.

Bah Humbug ! frankly just won't work
These are duties you cannot shirk
There’s no point fighting it at all-
So get stuck in – and have a ball!

Superstitions

These sayings abound - and most people know
That under a ladder you never should go,
It’s right ear for spite, left ear for love,
You’ll have good luck if you pick up a glove.

Carry a charm - a rabbit’s foot’s best -
Wait ‘til June before you take off your vest!
To avoid warts stay away from a toad,
Keep off the cracks as you walk down the road.

When moving house buy yourself a new broom,
A broken mirror brings seven years’ gloom,
Throw a pinch of salt over your left shoulder,
Those with warm hearts have hands that are colder .

Don’t use your scissors on New Year’s Day,
An itchy palm says cash on the way,
Wearing new clothes at Easter’s the right thing to do,
And shooting star wishes, they always come true.

What of these phrases that we often repeat
Hoping a tall, handsome stranger we’ll meet?
Should we desist – I’m not sure that we could --
We think we’ll play safe and keep on touching wood!

the Weekly Poem for November 6 2009

PAUSE

Wherever you are on Wednesday next
At eleven when the sirens sound
Put down the coffee, hold off the text,
Stop and stand and hold your ground.

For this is when in Remembrance Week
We all need to be silent and still,
Not to text nor e-mail nor call nor speak
But let the names and memories fill

The November air that settles around
Us all - civilian, soldier, child –
As we remember without a sound
The lives of millions by war defiled.

In those two minutes let your thought
Drift to names and places heard
Of battles, and of those who fought -
Remember them without a word.

Think of those whose lives were lost
In defence of a greater cause,
Whose devotion had a heavy cost.
The least you owe - this tiny pause.

Make this gap in your busy day
Time to reflect on why they died.
They died in the hope of a better way,
So pause – and wear your poppy with pride.
the Weekly Poem is coming - watch this space. Wordybirdies are working on it now...

30th October 2009

Trick or Treat - it's up to you!

As the leaves of autumn swirl around
The October night is full of sound
All over town they can be seen
The kids dressed up for Halloween
In purple wigs and witches’ hats
With twiggy broomsticks and plastic bats
Of this night they make the most
Clad as wizards, ghouls and ghosts
Adding to the evening's thrills
Pumpkins glow on window sills

When Saturday evening shadows fall
At neighbours’ houses they will call
They’ll be round for tricks or treats
Seeking lots of sticky sweets
If this whole event you despise
Why not don your own disguise,
Scream and cackle at the door -
Then they won't bother you any more!

What did YOU do with your Extra Hour?

Sixty minutes doesn’t seem long
But an extra hour can’t be wrong
(Even though by five the light
Has all but gone - it feels like night
And, at seven in the morning,
When you’re coming to and yawning,
The day’s already well begun
Look out your window, there’s the sun!)

How you use it’s up to you
There’s so much choice of what to do:
Spend it wisely, get things done,
Clean the car, go for a run,
Early breakfast, tea and toast -
Of this time make the most

Or you may choose in bed to stay
And snore the extra hour away
Or do something more lascivious -
To that we’d like to stay oblivious!
Whatever you do it’s still a treat
As it’s another year for a repeat!

the Weekly Poem is on its way...

oh yes it is ! And this week it's all about those clocks going back tomorrow night giving us an extra hour ! What will YOU do with it ???

The Weekly Poem - dedicated to Doreen

Once in while (or more for some)
The day of moving house will come,
Keenly sought, closely planned,
Friends around to lend a hand.
Stuff's been packed away for days -
How much you have can still amaze.
All is emptied from your place,
A tiny tear rolls down your face.
Before you leave, a last look round,
Then off to the new place you have found
Where you unload all your stuff
(Seems you have more than enough)
To fill the rooms and shelves and nooks
(You'll need plenty screws and hooks)
Until everything's in splendid fettle -
Unless of course you've lost the kettle !

And though for your old home you might long
In no time at all you will belong
In your new home, because, you see,
All your memories still will be
Inside your heart, your head, your mind -
Not one will have been left behind.

new Weekly Poem tomorrow - stand by your beds !

Tuesday, 13 October 2009

Wordybirdies are working on a special project for which we are composing a very special poem - we hope to be able to put it on this site before long but as it involves the agreement of other parties, we don't quite know yet.

We hope you're enjoying our Weekly Poems - they give us great pleasure to write every Friday and we hope that they bring a little sunshine into your week. If you're having a great week, well then they just make it even greater, and if you're having a not-so-great week, then maybe they will bring you a little fun and comfort for a while.

A stylish Weekly Poem !

As nights draw in and temperatures drop
And into our comfy chairs we flop
Along comes something designed to cheer,
The greatest style show of the year!
Of course it's London Fashion Week,
Strutting models tall and sleek
Showing off the latest craze
Mostly designed to amaze.

Like, for instance, the killer heels -
Who knows how the poor girl feels
Tottering on all nine inches
Coping with those vicious pinches
On toe and heel and arch and soles
Akin to walking on hot coals.
All in the name of looking cool
One step ahead, the golden rule.

While we stay home with the nippers
And shuffle round in comfy slippers
Not high fashion, not off the wall,
But at least our feet don't hurt at all !

it's there...

Yes, our ode to The Leader is in today's paper, on page 12.

if you don't live in North East Wales and have absolutely NO idea what, where or how much The Leader is, we'll post the poem up on here tomorrow in addition to our Weekly Poem.

twenty words ?...no, no...we mean twenty lines !

Yes, that's right of course - twenty lines. Although we could do a twenty-word ode if that's what you'd like...sometimes less really is more...

National Poetry Day tomorrow !

...and the Wordybirdies are getting really excited about seeing their specially-written poem in The Leader tomorrow morning. Based on the theme of Heroes and Heroines we penned this twenty-word ode to our local newspaper to celebrate its contribution to local life and also to celebrate the fact that it has very recently become a morning newspaper instead of an evening one. Find it at www.leaderlive.co.uk tomorrow !

Also excited about the fact that our lovely website is now under construction - we can't wait to see it on screen but are having to be patient ! In the meantime, if you want to contact us why not ring us on 07854 047388.

the Weekly Poem - Heroes and Heroines

Here it is, the special Wordybirdies Weekly Poem for National Poetry Day, whose theme is Heroes and Heroines:

October 2nd 2009 - Hydref 2 2009

No need of medal nor laurel wreath,

everyday heroes go on beneath,

quietly adding love to life,

easing out the strain and strife

in simple acts that mean so much:

the sunny smile, the gentle touch,

the cheery wave, the friendly word,

the heartfelt thank you, the worry heard,

the offer of help not sought out,

good intentions not in doubt.

For all of this there is no cost -

so much is gained, and nothing lost.

Everyday heroes are everywhere

Your chance to join them is right there.

Make the difference, do the good deed -

To be a hero - that's all you need.

National Poetry Day

With National Poetry Day coming up next Thursday, 8th October, Wordybirdies are composing a special poem celebrating the theme of the Day, which is Heroes and Heroines. Look back later for a really special Weekly Poem.

The first-ever Wordybirdies Weekly Poem

Here it is folks ! The first-ever in the history of the world Wordybirdies Weekly Poem !

ENJOY !

September 25th 2009 - Medi 25 2009

Here we sit in our nest
Wondering what it is that's best
To get you through the coming week
Even though it might seem bleak
To make your lips curl in a smile
So that within a little while
Life will not seem so perverse
When you read our weekly verse

The Autumn's here, the weather's good
It's not raining like it could
The leaves are turning, red and gold
The season's glories now unfold
Now's the time to get out there
And breathe in all that crisp fresh air
Feel your spirits lift and soar
Who could really wish for more ?

Wordybirdies say welcome !

Welcome to Wordybirdies - home of the Weekly Poem !
